AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) - "Fight poverty with passion." "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." —Mahatma Gandhi The Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps Program is a community development program that provides: human resources to worthy non-profits; professional and life-skills training for community members; and collaborations for best practices which in turn increases the overall outreach of the non-profits and enables citizens to live more meaningful and independent lives. Nevada Outdoor School's AmeriCorps* VISTA program hosts 9 VISTA members who serve 24 hours a day at worthy organizations throughout rural northern Nevada. The host sites where members serve include the First Way Pregnancy Center, The Friends of Black Rock High Rock, Nevada Outdoor School, French Ford Middle School, Great Basin College,Humboldt County School District, Lander County School District, Humboldt Development Authority, and Western Nevada Development District. These members are individuals who are dedicating a year of their lives to serving others in the community by being environmental stewards, educators, mentors, and caregivers. |
Benefits of Full-Time AmeriCorps VISTA Member:
- Living stipend of $840/month
- A $5,350 Educational Award or $1,200 cash stipend at the end of your service
- Health Insurance
- 2 weeks of vacation time, and sick-leave
- Member development and training from the Corporation for National and Community Service
- On-the-job Training specific to your interest and position
- Loan Forbearance and payment for accrued interest on education loans

The Black Rock Desert / High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area is a sensitive, multi-use area and visitors should enter the area informed. |

| Great Basin College - Winnemucca, NV Service Learning Coordinator The VISTA member serving as the Service Learning Coordinator will develop a service-learning program similar to a Campus Compact project, in which students gain academic credit for volunteering. The VISTA member will partner with professors at the College and encourage them to include service hours as a requirement for a course. The member will coordinate with local governmental agencies and non-profits to act as host sites where students will be able to volunteer and therefore gain hands-on experience in their field of study. Finally, the member will recruit students to participate in this program. |

| Lander County School District Lander County School District is located in beautiful Battle Mountain and Austin, Nevada, two small communities nestled between several mountain ranges in Northeastern Nevada. Our K-12 public school district has an enrollment of approximately 1,300 students and offers comprehensive curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs through two high schools. Our district is renowned for its hospitality and for producing outstanding academic and activity performance. Our District’s curriculum is aligned with Nevada State Standards. All teachers continue working on curriculum, exhibiting curriculum on the Internet for parents and others to review, and planning assessment, which will measure the success of these efforts. |
