Must we always teach our children with books? Let them look at the mountains and the stars up above. Let them look at the beauty of the waters and the trees and flowers on earth. They will then begin to think, and to think is the beginning of a real education.

AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country's critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service. AmeriCorps opens the door for citizens to serve in a variety of ways. Through their service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps members address critical needs in communities throughout America, including:

  • Tutoring and mentoring disadvantaged youth
  • Fighting illiteracy
  • Improving health services
  • Building affordable housing
  • Teaching computer skills
  • Cleaning parks and streams
  • Managing or operating after-school programs
  • Helping communities respond to disasters
  • Building organizational capacity

AmeriCorps is made up of three programs: AmeriCorps*State and National, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps).

Nevada Outdoor School is the host of an AmeriCorps*State program. The purpose of AmeriCorps*State is to engage AmeriCorps members in direct service and capacity-building to address unmet community needs. Local programs design service activities for a team of members serving full- or part-time for one year or during the summer. Sample activities include tutoring and mentoring youth, assisting crime victims, building homes, and restoring parks. AmeriCorps members also mobilize community volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the organizations where they serve." The Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that fosters knowledge and respect for all living and non living things, increases scientific literacy, and promotes ecological stewardship in rural Nevada and beyond.

The Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps* State Program

Nevada Outdoor School's AmeriCorps* State program is in its first year of operation. Currently, the program hosts 7 full-time AmeriCorps members and one half-time member at worthy organizations throughout the greater Winnemucca area. The host sites where members serve include the Friends of the Black Rock/High Rock, Nevada Outdoor School, the American Red Cross, the Winnemucca Domestic Violence Shelter, and Safe Haven Rescue Zoo. These members are individuals who are dedicating a year of their lives to serving others in the community by being environmental stewards and educators. Nevada Outdoor School is excited to begin its partnership with AmeriCorps and is looking forward to strengthening the Winnemucca community through service-learning projects.
